Just a short story i wrote on the bus yesterday.
She glanced at the clock across the street.
Nearly 11.
Only a few more minutes, she thought. Her back pressed against the cool brick wall, the mysterious girl let herself slide to the ground, careful to stay in the shadows. She had been standing in that same spot for almost an hour and her legs were exausted, but she didn't have much time to rest.
11:00PM. The small bell above the door rang as the man stepped outside. He scanned the darkness suspiciously as he locked up the store. She knew he couldn't see her hiding in the shadows but she moved back even closer to the wall as he walked by her. The girl held her breath until he reached his car and she waited for him to drive away.
When he was gone, she stepped in front of the building, entered the security code and unlocked the door with a key she had stolen a few nights ago.
Not a sound. Nobody was here, but still she needed to be quiet. She couldn't risk anyone nearby hearing her before she was done. She slipped inside without making a noise.
It only took her a few seconds to find what she was looking for. Full of confidence, the girl walked behind the counter and opened a small drawer. She picked up a set of keys and closed it again.
She was just about to open the door when she heard people walking down the street. With all the windows, she knew they would see her and she didn't have time to hide. She crouched and looked down, letting her long dark hair cover her face, until they passed.
She stepped outside, holding the keys tightly in her hand, and walked down the street. She turned at the first alley, where a bright red convertible was parked.
Violet climbed into the car and inserted one of the keys. A smile of satisfaction crossed her face as it started.
